Keith Urban Says Nicole Kidman’s Intervention and Love Got Him Sober
Opening up to Oprah about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, Urban said that after just a few months of marriage to Kidman in 2006 he was in deep trouble with cocaine and alcohol but confessed that he was too scared to seek treatment, explaining, "[I thought], 'Surely let's give it a few years so we've got some solidity, because this kind of thing could tear us apart. This could just destroy us.’”
Kidman, however, was having none of it and she and a few friends organized an intervention that Urban says moved him deeply - as he describes it, "To see love in action to that degree ... I'd never experienced anything like that." He says he cancelled a show that was scheduled for that very evening and went straight to rehab, for his third attempt at sobriety.
He says that it’s his love for Kidman that’s kept him sober these past 4 years since that third stay in rehab, and wonders at her perseverance in seeing him through, getting a bit emotional as he said "She really should've just walked…I'm just glad she didn't."
