Program Philosophy
SUWS of the Carolinas has proven to be highly effective in helping troubled teenagers identify a distorted self-image, limiting emotional beliefs and destructive behavioral habits in order to improve their decision-making. This newfound awareness enables students to shift their focus from personal entitlement and blaming to mastering personal responsibility and practicing healthy relationship skills.
The wilderness setting is the ideal catalyst to connect with students. SUWS of the Carolinas moves children from their "emotional comfort zone" by shifting them to a new and challenging environment. The demands of mastering their new setting causes students to engage in their automatic behavioral habits, allowing SUWS’ therapists and highly trained counselors to positively engage them using traditional therapeutic methods.

Certifications
SUWS of the Carolinas is licensed in the state of North Carolina.
The SUWS Adolescent Program was established in 1981 and maintains memberships in wilderness program associations, including the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Industry Council (OBHIC), the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP), the National Association of Therapeutic Wilderness Camps (NATWC) and the Association for Experiential Education.
The Field Supervisors are licensed professional counselors.
