Spending Time on the Internet

I enjoy the internet and I am out of work at the moment. I spend most of my waking hours online but I do not think I have a problem, it is just something that I like to do. Is there anything intrinsically wrong with spending 16 hours a day online?

Jill Palmer Says...

To assess whether there is a problem I would want to know the answers to a few questions. Are you not doing other things like building relationships, looking for a job, hobbies, etc in order to be on-line? Are you avoiding something else in your life and hence hiding on-line? Or are you just bored with nothing else to do so being on-line all day is just something to fill your time? Doing anything for 16 hours a day seems out of balance to me so I would assess the reasons why you are on-line for so long and decide whether those reasons are ok with you. You're the one that needs to be ok with how you spend your time. Is spending 16 hours a day on-line a problem for you? For the people around you? If not, then it might not be a problem right now.

Sincerely, Jill Palmer, LPC
