Find Addiction Treatment in Texas

Although Texas continues to have one of the lowest rates of opioid overdose deaths, the state has its fair share of substance abuse issues. Because of Texas' proximity to the Mexican border, the availability of some illicit drugs like heroin, crystal meth, cocaine, and prescription drugs is higher than in many other states.

Alcoholism continues to be Texas' most significant substance abuse problem, however, and most Texans seek rehabs for alcohol-only addiction treatment.

Unfortunately, too many in Texas avoid the drug and alcohol rehab treatment they need. Treatment can work, and you can beat addiction. No one in Texas needs to keep drinking or using thinking that they won't get the help they need.

Private inpatient addiction treatment at a luxury drug and alcohol rehab may be beyond the reach of many without good private health insurance (like a PPO health plan). However, there are many Medicaid treatment centers and low-cost rehabs in Texas. These affordable or free drug and alcohol rehabs will charge only as much as you can afford to pay, and will rarely turn anyone away for financial reasons.

If you have no insurance, the State of Texas may fund all or a part of your drug or alcohol rehab. In some cases, you may qualify for state assistance, even if you do not qualify for Medicaid or other state-funded medical care.

For public addiction treatment and state funding in your community, the Texas Health and Human Services contracts with local mental health authorities (LMHAs) to deliver addiction treatment services for all counties across Texas.

So-called "outreach, screening, assessment and referral centers" (OSAR) may be the first point of contact for people seeking addiction treatment services in Texas. OSAR centers help people get substance use services, case management and peer support. An OSAR LMHA will stay in touch with people waiting for treatment and refer them to community services while they are waiting.

To find a state-funded service in your area, please call the OSAR service provider in your region. Their numbers are listed here. For more information, you can also dial 2-1-1, or call 877-541-7905.
